To obtain a private pilot certificate, you must:

 

1. pass a 60-question written/knowledge test with a score of 70% or better.
2. pass an FAA checkride(Practical Test) which includes an oral quiz and a flight test.

Airmen's application - Fondly known as 8710 by the FAA. You'll need to complete your application for your Practical Exam and have your CFI endorse it.

Practical Test Standards -These are the standards the FAA will expect for the successful completion of your FAA Practical Exam. Your instructor will probably have you perform these tasks with more accuracy then required in the PTS.
